Music and family

For this blog, I reached out to my step dad being that he’s the one who I know that is actively involved with instrumental music and is a musician. He plays at my church and put my interest into drums and made me pursue more. For the main part of my life I seen him as just a piano player, even when him and my mom were together, after watching and observing and doing this blog…I’ve learned more.

The person I’m talking about is Anthony McGowan, who started out with music at four years old. First instrument was guitar. A few songs and artist that that inspired him for guitars were songs like

Eventually he moves to keyboard and started playing more from 9 to now. Majority of the songs that he played was appropriate for this class but of course some weren’t. He began playing in a band with folks that were 15, he’s been involved in music so much that it’s like therapy for him,
. Gives him way to take his mind off things and put emotions into his music

Around his 30s he moved into gospel and be a musician for churches and kept his roots with the songs he liked. Eventually formed his own band. The songs were like line dancing. There were many genres that went into the jam sessions.

An interesting fact is that he didn’t take band, he was in chorus. Was on the choir and the church he was in made it the the nationals for choirs. AME. On his own he started producing for a few people, even started doing gospel albums. Has his own studio as well.

Another inspiration was princes. Huge inspiration and I’m sure everyone can relate to that.

A tune lots are familiar with

One of the things he’s good at is getting a description of what a person is like musically or their interest and can find artist that many will like or know of. Most of you may know of this artist and song

Some of you may know artist like Georgia Clinton and Teddy Riley but those were ones he liked. Last one that came to mind were Eric Clapton. His genres that he is most familiar with is pop and r&b

He does venture out into Raggae, it’s the instrumental music that drives you and like some country due to the story telling

Producers or artist that inspired him was a mentor, Unise Taylor, he introduced him to band when Anthony was 12. Became a professional. He joined his band when Anthony became an adult. Sadly, his mentor passed away..Rip.

He went to school at an art institute in Atlanta for a good while but took a different route due to getting boxed in by folks telling him he was really good at one thing due to jealousy of the other when he was just as good on whatever. Another interesting thing, he was supposed to meet up with key sweat and baby face in Atlanta but his friend group that had anything to do with his passion held him back due to them feeling insecure of their own accomplishments and seeing him have a successful life bothered them, the light wasn’t on them.

After being in the cna filed, h still stays in tune with music. Still James on the piano and have jam sessions it’s people near by and friends. Still produce music and wish to have times he can get away for a few days and just dedicate time to music, life has way where you have to manage that and responsibilities. No matter what he finds an outlet to continue his passion.

  3. OH MY GOSH ITS PURPLE RAIIIIN
I loved reading about your step dads journey through all the different music styles and instruments! I think even for a more instrumentalist leaning person, choirs can really help with SoMeThInG (idk what but its like this magical experience of ideas all coming together and making more sense and things seem to get easier...)
